Big Favorites and High Seeds Go Down Tonight

All day today we saw big favorites and higher seeded teams not only just lose, but getting destroyed in conference tournament play. In the Atlantic Sun we saw (2) Bellarmine, (3) Lipscomb and (4) North Florida all lose as favorites in the quarterfinals. The Atlantic Sun semifinals will now feature the 5, 6 and 7 seeds. The popular pick in our pool, which 71% of the pool picked, (1) Liberty is still alive. Absolutely nobody picked the 5-7 seeds so this conference for us is Liberty or bust.

In the Big South (2) Radford was completely destroyed by (3) Campbell, while (1) Winthrop pounded on (5) Longwood. The Big South is the first conference to have its conference championship game matchup set. On Sunday, 3/7/21 we'll see (1) Winthrop take on (3) Campbell for a trip to the NCAA tournament. Brad is the lone person who picked Campbell and what a huge win this would be for him as it checks 2 boxes: lone winner and bonus points. The Campbell Camels may have my all time favorite hashtag. #RollHumps

In the Ohio Valley conference (5) Murray State lost to (4) Jacksonville State in a overtime thriller. We did have 3 people with Murray State, I'm just going to assume they thought this was the 2018-19 season and Ja Morant was still on the team. Jacksonville State my have my second favorite hashtag. #Fearthebeak

Let's take a look at our still way too early top 4:

  1. Jenn jumps into 1st place with 0 losses
  2. Brad moves up a spot into 2nd place with 0 losses
  3. Ryan makes an appearance with only 1 loss and 42 max points
  4. SJS also makes an appearance with only 1 loss and 42 max points
Typically we head into the 1st weekend with more people at 0 losses, but with all the schedule changes, lower seeds being pressed into action sooner than before and conferences that started before our pool was finalized it all makes sense. Still, 0 losses is always impressive. While it's fun to look at the standings, it really is meaningless this early. 16-20 points wins this pool and even the worst of us still have 33+ max points. We have seen the standings turn upside after the first weekend of conference champions being crowned so don't celebrate too early and don't get down if you're towards the bottom.

I'm not sure if I'll put out a morning blog post, but Friday is going to bring us 11 conference tournaments in progress with 15 conference tournament games from early morning to late at night. Sit back, enjoy the games and hopefully watch yourself climb up the standings.
