The first ticket has been punched! (2) Morehead State started out hot and never looked back as they completely destroyed (1) Belmont. This was never even game and a huge let down for our first conference tournament championship game. In our pool Chris Iannuzzi jumps into 1st place all by himself as he was the only person to pick (2) Morehead State. Great job Nuzzi - I guarantee he is not reading this and forgot college basketball is even being played right now. We do have 3 conference tournament championship games tomorrow (3/7/21) so we'll see the standings change quickly.
In addition to Morehead State winning the Ohio Valley conference championship game we had an action packed day of conference tournaments and some great non conference tournament games. But here we don't care about non conference tournament games. Most people were slaughtered today in the pool, but we had a few survivors. Let's look at what happened in each conference.
All of the favorites in the America East were eliminated today resulting in a championship game that will feature (6) UMass-Lowell vs. (3) Hartford. Amazingly, 29 out of 30 people have been eliminated. The only survivor is Mattyboi with his pick of UMass-Lowell.
The Northeast conference is hilarious because it literally just tipped off today and already half the pool has been eliminated. (3) Sacred Heart and (1) Wagner were eliminated immediately. I guess this is what is expected when a conference tournament only consistent of 4 teams. Nobody has (4) Mount St. Mary's which means this conference has turned into (2) Bryant or bust. It's cute when the Ivy League does a 4 team tournament, but any other league it looks dumb. Just look how stupid a 4 team bracket looks.
The Patriot League quarterfinals saw 2 big upsets with (3) Lafayette and (1) Navy both going down leaving only (2) Colgate alive in our pool. Moving over to the Southern Conference we saw the 2, 3 and 4 seeds lose, wiping out 25 people in a matter of hours. The standings have so much red from today with half these conferences being wiped out, almost like...
It's been a wild day and the unexpected has been happening all day in these conference tournaments, but this is why we love March! Look for an early morning blog post previewing Sunday's 3 conference championship games along with any spreadsheet updates from some of the late night games wrapping up. One final note - seeding for conferences continues to be finalized and is having major impacts to our pool, especially in conferences like Conference USA and MEAC. Don't forget to take a peak and review how seeding has changed in these conferences, impacting bonus point possibilities for many.
