Southern Conference and Sun Belt Championship Games Tonight

2 more conference tournament championship games will be played today in both the Southern Conference and the Sun Belt. Side note, I do hate when on a light day the championship games start at the same exact time. Both of these games will tip off at 6:00p central time time today, these conferences should coordinate and figure out the scheduling so they can feature their game or at least stagger tip offs by 1 hour. Enough of the rant, both of these games are important to our pool so let's look at the breakdown.

Southern Conference
Shockingly, only 5 out of 30 are still alive in this conference with all 5 on (1) UNC Greensboro. It's amazing at how much we overthink some of our picks that we have a scenario where only 5 people are on the number 1 seed in a low major conference. UNC Greensboro is a slight favorite at 5 points, which is good news for the 25 people that will be rooting for (7) Mercer. Before the Southern Conference even tipped off, 44% of our pool picked (3) Furman and Team Rankings gave Furman a 35% chance to win the conference tournament. The last time a 1 seed did not win the Southern Conference tournament was in 2017 with East Tennessee State.

Sun Belt
A few more of us are alive in the Sun Belt conference tournament with 12 out of 30 people up for a win. All 12 are on (1E) Georgia State in the first conference tournament championship game with letters in the seeding. 18 people will be rooting for (4E) Appalachian State to knock of the 7 point favorite, as no one picked Appalachian State. Before the Sun Belt conference tipped off, 35% of our pool did pick Georgia State and Team Rankings gave Georgia State a 30% chance to win which made us very aligned as usual. No champion was crowned in 2020, but Georgia State won the conference tournament in 2019 and 2018. This is a huge day for Dan Sohler as he can pick up 2 wins and jump into 1st place all alone.

In addition to our 2 conference tournament championship games we do have 9 more conference tournament games today, most will result in losses based on the match ups. The Colonial, Horizon League, Summit League and West Coast conferences each have 2 semifinals games today. The MAAC is the only new conference that tips off today with (11) Rider vs. (6) Canisius, no impact to our pool with this game.

Now let's run down just a few items to catch up:
  • Of the 31 conference tournaments: 4 are complete, 11 are in progress and 16 did not start.
  • Make sure to review the Southland Conference as 10 out of 30 people were fucked by picking Stephen F. Austin - they are now ineligible to even play in the conference tournament. And no, you can't change your pick, it is a loss.
  • All conference seeding is now finalized and updated in the standings spreadsheet. Unless some weird COVID related re-seeding happens, bonus points are now locked in and we won't see that fluctuation going forward.
  • BI and Jack are the only people being shut out - no wins - I had to get that in.
  • Regardless of where you are in the standings, remember that 16 conference tournaments didn't even start yet. We have seen these standings completely flip the Friday/Saturday before Selection Sunday.
